Edenfield Centre to become the Riverside Centre following patient abuse scandal
The NHS trust running the mental health facility was again rated as "inadequate" in January 2025.
This morning (Tuesday 26th August) the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust announced that the infamous Edenfield Centre will now be known as the Riverside Centre going forwards. The Chief Executive, Karen Howell, noted that the name change is to recognise "that we're moving forward" and "reflecting on the past". It comes after "extensive engagement" from the NHS trust, gathering feedback from "around 45%" of inpatients, carers and staff.
An investigation by BBC Panorama was aired in September 2022, revealing a culture of staff abuse towards vulnerable patients at the Edenfield Centre. Numerous staff members at the facility were sacked or suspended in response to the TV broadcast.
Since then, the facility has been under civil and criminal investigations by bodies including Greater Manchester Police and the NHS. An independent review of the centre was also launched, chaired by Professor Oliver Shanley OBE.
In January 2025, the Care Quality Commission again rated the NHS trust as "inadequate", following an unannounced inspection of the Edenfield Centre in late 2024.
